NASHVILLE - Police say a 3-year-old girl survived on cookies and soft drinks for up to six days in an apartment with the body of her grandmother.
Authorities say 48-year-old Doris Fay Porter died of natural causes Friday or Saturday. Her boyfriend found her Thursday after trying to reach her by phone. He says she wasn't feeling well Friday. There are no signs of foul play.
A spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Children's Services says the toddler is "in good health and well cared for." Officers say she was talkative and didn't appear to be hungry or scared. During the ordeal, she apparently ate snacks she could reach in the kitchen.
Police also found toys scattered around the apartment and believe the girl spent much of the past several days playing with them. A police spokesman says the child believed her grandmother was sleeping.
Porter had been in charge of the girl's care. The toddler's mother is on her way to Nashville from out-of-state.
