I don't like the term "mental problems". What we suffer from is a chemical imbalance within our brains that cause the brain to send out incorrect messages. And don't be shocked. The difference between now and 30 years ago is that doctors are better educated. This is the difference between using leaches to suck out the bad humors to doctors using penicillin.

Years ago if something like this happened we would have been put in an insane aslyum or worse. We would have been called meloncholy. Now we have a label for it. Depression and we know that it is related to long term stress which causes the breakdown of the brains ability to produce seratonin. Our only problem is that we don't know exactly how to treat it or how to prevent it. Hopefully one day there will be a drug that prevents this from happening. In the meantime the rest of us take our medications to control the sadness that we feel without it.

I am sure that if part of a yearly physical was a psychological examination to detect this sort of chemical imbalance, you would find that more people need help than are asking for it. After all, how many people have high cholesterol and have no idication that they have this condition.
